CBD Dog Treat Recipe

Spread the love

Can I tell you a secret? I am definitely notthe sort of person who makes food for my dog from scratch.

Then I discovered that my dog, Pepper, gets a ton of benefits from CBD oil. I started giving her CBD oil for joint pain and noticed that it also really mellowed her anxiety.

Mellow Pepper

It can be annoying and messy to squeeze oil into Pepper’s mouth so I wanted to buy CBD dog treats.  Unfortunately, my favorite Hemp Extract companies don’t make dog treats (yet.) I only found one company that does make them, and they’re obviously not the best dog treats because Pepper wanted nothing to do with them.

So I set out to find the best CBD dog treats recipe. I did quite a bit of experimenting and settled on a couple that are easy to do and that Pepper LOVES. For reference, Pepper is a 4 year old 19lb female pug. So, keep in mind that this CBD oil dog treats recipe is for a small dog.

The common recommended dosage of CBD for a dog is about 1-5mg per 10lbs. That means I can get away with giving little pepper just a few drops per treat, while a large breed dog may need much more.

In my opinion you can’t really give your dog too much CBD. At this point, Pepper gets as much CBD as her little heart desires because it makes her feel better and it never makes her sick or anything like that. She’s scarfed down whole droppers full and nothing happened but an extremely chillaxed little pug.

Pepper’s favorite CBD Dog Treat Recipe

This recipe calls for a food processor but you could probably mix it up by hand. These more like chewy dog treats than a traditional milk bone dog biscuit. So if you’re looking for a CBD milk bone recipe scroll down, I have one of those too.

  •             1/3 cup coconut oil
  •             2-3 tablespoons peanut butter (all natural, no sugar added)
  •             2 ½ cups quick oats (or old fashioned oats)
  •             3 ml Full Spectrum Pet Hemp
  •             1/3 cup finely shredded coconut or coconut flour (optional)

Step 1. Put the coconut oil, peanut butter, and oats in a food processor and mix until well combined

Step 2.  Roll into balls the appropriate size for your dog or puppy. I use a teaspoon to scoop bite sized amounts for Pepper, but a bigger dog might want a tablespoon or more.

Step 3. (optional) Roll each ball in the f coconut to coat the outside (these add flavor and nutrition but also help keep them from sticking together when you store them in the fridge)

Step 4. Place on a flat tray lined with parchment paper and refrigerate for half an hour. Your dog can eat these immediately whether they are refrigerated or not but after they are refrigerated they can be stored in Tupperware in the refrigerator without sticking together.

It’s as simple as that!

These pet treats are hypoallergenic and should be safe for most doggy’s tummies. However, you don’t want to feed your pet too many of these at once or the coconut oil can act as a laxative.

The best cbd dog treats are homemade CBD dog treats because you can make sure the ingredients are healthy, natural, and nutritious.

CBD Dog Anxiety

My little pepper is not alone in having undue anxiety. Every breed can be affected by dog anxiety resulting in behavioral problems such as barking, destroying furniture, and urinating or defacating in the house.

Elderly dogs are especially prone to anxiety because of cognitive decline. Younger dogs may be affected separation anxiety when owners leave. And of course, rescue dogs are the most likely to have phobias and fears related to past mistreatment.

Owners who want to help their dogs cope and relax should try CBD dog treats for anxiety. Treats can help prepare your furbaby to face a predictable fear or phobia such as a visit to the veterinarian, thunderstorm, or 4thof July fireworks. It’s much safer and healthier than prescribed benzodiazepines and antidepressants.

I give pepper a CBD treat before I have company over because her anxiety can cause her to be a little aggressive. I also give her a dog CBD edible any time she seems high strung and uncomfortable. In about half an hour she stops being restless and pacing, barking, shaking, or depressed and just relaxes for the rest of the day.

CBD treats for dogs’ anxiety really work

CBD Dog Treats for Arthritis

My next-door neighbor has a beautiful aging German Shephard named Moxxy who suffers from terrible joint pain from arthritis.

I shared some of my Pepper’s dog CBD with this arthritic old lady and she feels young again! She’s playful, she moves around more, doesn’t whine as much, and just seems much happier.

CBD dog treats for joint pain are another great reason to grab a bottle of hemp extract and start whipping up a homemade batch of chewy dog treats.

You can also add other supportive ingredients such as hydrolyzed collagen and fish oil to your CBD dog treats for pain to support and strengthen your dog’s joints and ligaments over time. They will love the taste, feel better from the pain relief CBD, and strengthen over time with the supplements. Moxxy’s recipe for treats includes an added cup of hydrolyzed collagen but she gets her fish oil separately.

Dog Edibles CBD

The trick to finding a good CBD product for homemade doggy edibles is to find a CBD product you would take yourself. Dog endocannabinoid systems function the exact same way as humans’ and they can take small amounts of oil just like we can. There’s no reason a dog CBD product should be any different than a human CBD product.

There is a lot of bad CBD on the market. My advice is to avoid the vape shop and buy online from places with good reviews that show you their lab tests.

I tried a lot of different brands of hemp-derived CBD and all of the ones I got in vape shops were bad. What I mean by that is they would taste sweet but claim to have no added sweeteners, or they would be in propylene glycol but claim to be edible.

I stick with Immortal Tortoise brand CBD because they’re the brand I know and trust but you can use whatever brand you trust.

The best hemp dog treat is one your pet will actually enjoy!

Milk Bone Dog Treats

You can’t mention dog treats without talking about the classic milk bone!

To be honest my pepper prefers the above chewy dog treat recipe to this hemp milk bone dog treat recipe, which is why I put it first.

Easy CBD Milk Bone Dog Treats Recipe

Allow CBD pet treats to completely cool before giving to your dog.

CBD Dog Treats Benefits

Pretty much all animals (all vertebrate mammals) have the same endocannabinoid system. This means that CBD effects dogs pretty much the same way that it effects rats and humans.

In clinical studies, it’s been shown that CBD has the ability to relieve inflammation, relieve pain, reduce seizures, reduce symptoms of psychosis, reduce muscle spasms, and reduce anxiety (Kogan et al. 2007; Dialogues Clin Neurosci).

This means CBD can help your puppy if he or she suffers from:

  • Epilepsy and seizures
    • Cannabidiol is such a powerful anti-spasmodic that the FDA recently approved a drug made of pure CBD as a prescription for certain types of epilepsy.
  • Pain
    • CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory that can help with both chronic and acute pain. Commonly used to help dogs cope with arthritis.
  • Anxiety
    • CBD can be used to treat even severe anxiety in dogs and there is some evidence that it may even help with depression
  • Pain from Hip Dysplasia
    • Common in many small breeds of dogs, CBD can help ease pain from this condition and also help strengthen bones after surgery
  • Bone problems
    • Studies have observed that CBD use strengthens bones weakened due to osteoporosis
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
    • reduces symptoms of IBS and offers relief from related pain
  • Glaucoma
    • CBD has been shown to relieve eye pressure in patients with glaucoma
  • Nausea and vomiting
    • CBD is a strong anti-emetic that can help relieve nausea and vomiting
  • Muscle Relaxant
    • In addition to treating muscle spasms CBD also works against conditions that cause muscles of the dog’s body to tighten up such as; muscle hypertonicity, meningitis, myositis, and myasthenia gravis.
  • Diabetes
    • CBD has been shown to help regulate blood sugar levels and mitigate some of the symptoms of diabetes
  • Insomnia and Sleep issues
    • Is your puppy keeping you up at night? CBD has been shown to improve sleep patterns in both dogs and humans
  • Circulation
    • CBD can help improve blood flow and reduce related complications. Can be especially helpful in dogs who have suffered from heart worm
  • Anti-oxidant
    • Cannabidiol is a powerful antioxidant as are several of the other cannabinoids and terpenes found in hemp plants and full spectrum hemp extracts

I know some of you wanted me to do a CBD dog treats review of some of the pre-made brands out there, but I wasn’t really comfortable with anything I was seeing on the market. Either they didn’t have lab tests for the cannabis they are infusing into the treats or they weren’t transparent about the treat ingredients themselves. If you have one that you recommend please comment on the blog below – until then, I’ll be making my own. (it’s easy!)
